A Surprise Bamboo Jewelry Workshop—and an Unexpected Star

When we first launched our Bamboo Camellia Jewelry Workshop, most of our guests were exactly who we expected: women who loved handmade crafts, jewelry, and traditional Chinese culture.

Then one day, something new happened.

For the first time, we welcomed a male participant.

The guests were a couple from the United States.

What made the booking especially memorable was that the husband had secretly arranged the experience for his wife.

He knew she loved jewelry, particularly handmade pieces, and wanted to surprise her with something unique during their time in Shanghai.

Naturally, we assumed she would be the enthusiast and he would simply be accompanying her.

We were wrong.

For this workshop, guests create pieces from our Bamboo Camellia Collection, including earrings, rings, and brooches. Because the designs are quite detailed, we developed the workshop in two stages.

First, guests complete a finished piece using carefully prepared semi-finished materials, allowing them to experience the satisfaction of creating beautiful wearable jewelry.

Then they move on to the more challenging part: learning how bamboo strips are arranged and woven from the beginning.

This second stage often gives guests a deeper appreciation of the craftsmanship involved.

As the workshop progressed, the wife repeatedly commented on how difficult the weaving process was.

Meanwhile, her husband seemed surprisingly comfortable with it.

To everyone's surprise, he quickly developed a feel for the weaving techniques and worked through the challenges with confidence.

Even better, he constantly encouraged his wife whenever she felt frustrated.

Watching them work together was one of the most enjoyable parts of the day.

The workshop was never about creating perfect jewelry.

It was about sharing an experience.

As they finished their own pieces, another idea emerged.

Why stop there?

Inspired by the process, they decided to make an additional brooch as a gift for the wife's mother.

It was a thoughtful gesture that perfectly matched the spirit of handmade crafts: creating something meaningful for someone you care about.

By the end of the workshop, the table was filled not only with bamboo jewelry, but also with laughter.

The husband had a wonderful sense of humor throughout the session.

When it was time to leave, he jokingly handed me a tip and said:

"Today's tip isn't very much... because the workshop was too difficult!"

Of course, he was smiling.

And so was everyone else.

Looking back, what makes this experience memorable isn't simply the jewelry they created.

It's the story behind it.

A husband who quietly planned a surprise for his wife.

A workshop that challenged both of them.

And the unexpected discovery that the person we thought would be "just accompanying" turned out to be one of the most talented bamboo weavers in the room.
