From Tai Chi to Calligraphy: A Returning Member's Journey

Some guests visit once and continue on their travels.

Others discover something that keeps them coming back.

This story begins with a Tai Chi class.

Originally from Germany and currently living and working in Shanghai, our guest first discovered Yin Studio through a Tai Chi experience she booked on a travel platform. What started as a simple cultural activity soon became something more.

After the class, she joined our membership community—a program open to guests who have participated in one of our activities and joined our member WeChat group. Through the community, she stayed connected with upcoming events and continued exploring different aspects of Chinese culture.

Rather than stopping after one experience, she chose to continue her journey.

Recently, she returned to Yin Studio with a friend for a privately arranged calligraphy workshop.

Although Tai Chi and calligraphy may seem very different at first glance, both are deeply rooted in traditional Chinese culture. One expresses movement and balance through the body, while the other expresses patience, focus, and self-expression through brush and ink.

During the workshop, the two friends learned basic brush techniques, explored the meaning behind Chinese characters, and created their own calligraphy pieces to take home. Like many of our guests, they joined as complete beginners. They quickly discovered that calligraphy is not about creating perfect characters, but about slowing down, concentrating, and enjoying the process of learning something new.

One of the things we value most at Yin Studio is making traditional Chinese culture accessible to everyone. Whether it is Tai Chi, calligraphy, cooking, tea ceremony, martial arts, bamboo weaving, or traditional arts, most of our guests join with little or no prior experience. Our workshops are designed to be welcoming, hands-on, and beginner-friendly, allowing both visitors and Shanghai residents to explore Chinese culture with confidence.

As a returning member, she also enjoyed member pricing for the workshop.

Our membership program is designed for guests who would like to continue their cultural journey in Shanghai. Members receive discounts on future activities, earn points through participation and referrals, and can redeem those points for vouchers that can be shared with friends and family.

For us, the most meaningful part of this story is not the discount or the membership itself.

It is seeing someone move from being a first-time visitor to becoming part of our community.

From a Tai Chi class booked through a travel platform to a private calligraphy workshop with a friend, her journey reflects something we see often at Yin Studio: one cultural experience leads naturally to another.

Her story reminds us that discovering Chinese culture does not require previous knowledge or experience. Sometimes all it takes is curiosity and a willingness to try something new.

Even a beginner can write calligraphy guided by teacher

From Tai Chi to calligraphy, from a first visit to becoming a returning member, her journey shows how one cultural experience can open the door to many others.

And we are grateful to be part of that journey.
