A Surprise Birthday Party in Shanghai, Celebrated with Xiaolongbao

Friends and family celebrate together at a private gathering combining a birthday party and a Chinese cooking experience at Yin Studio.

An intimate courtyard, a surprise gathering of family and friends, and a birthday celebration inspired by a love of Shanghai soup dumplings.

Some birthday surprises take weeks of planning. This one came together around a simple but very personal idea: celebrating a birthday with the food the birthday person loved most.

For a European couple living in Shanghai, his wife wanted to create something special for her husband's birthday. Instead of booking a restaurant, she chose Yin Studio's courtyard venue for a private gathering with more than ten friends and family members. She planned the surprise with us in advance, arranging champagne and a birthday cake, and even decorating the space with balloons herself.

The plan was to keep everything secret until he arrived.

A Surprise Waiting in the Courtyard

Friends and family gather in the courtyard at Yin Studio before a surprise birthday celebration in Shanghai.

Before the birthday guest arrived, his friends and family gathered at the venue, ready to welcome him. When he walked through the entrance, everyone was there to surprise him.

It was the moment all the preparation had been leading up to — an unexpected gathering of the people closest to him, in a space transformed especially for the occasion.

Once the initial excitement settled, it was time for the main event. His wife's choice of activity was no coincidence: he absolutely loved xiaolongbao, Shanghai's famous soup dumplings. So rather than simply ordering his favourite food for the party, we invited everyone to learn how to make it together.

Making Xiaolongbao from Scratch

At Yin Studio, our xiaolongbao workshop begins with the dough, taking guests through the process step by step rather than starting with ready-made wrappers.

The birthday guest asked thoughtful questions about how it was prepared and watched closely as we demonstrated the techniques behind making xiaolongbao.

The birthday guest was particularly curious about the filling. He asked thoughtful questions about how it was prepared and watched closely as we demonstrated the techniques behind making xiaolongbao. He wasn't content just to observe — he wanted to understand how everything worked and try it for himself.

Soon, he was making his own dumplings alongside his friends and family. The worktable became a place for conversation, concentration, laughter, and the shared satisfaction of creating something by hand.

For us, these are some of the best moments in a cultural workshop: when an experience becomes personal, curiosity leads to questions, and people get to discover a traditional food beyond simply tasting it.

Champagne, Cake, and One Very Special Candle

After making and enjoying their xiaolongbao, it was time to celebrate the birthday properly.

The champagne was ready, the cake was brought out, and everyone gathered around to mark the occasion. But there was one final detail that made the celebration especially fitting: the birthday candle was shaped like a little xiaolongbao.

It was a playful nod to the food that had inspired the entire gathering — a small detail that brought the story full circle, from his wife's thoughtful choice of activity to the dumplings he had just learned to make himself.

What began as a carefully planned surprise became a birthday shared through food, hands-on discovery, and time spent with the people who mattered most.

A Different Way to Celebrate in Shanghai

We love seeing how Chinese cultural experiences can become part of people's everyday lives in Shanghai, not just something they try while travelling.

Yin Studio's courtyard venue offers a more intimate setting for private gatherings, while our hands-on cooking workshops give guests something to do together, learn together, and remember long after the day is over.

Whether you're planning a surprise birthday, a family celebration, or a gathering with friends, making Chinese food together can be a meaningful alternative to a conventional party.

Sometimes, the most personal celebrations begin with a simple question: What's their favourite food?

For this birthday, the answer was xiaolongbao.
